Faizah Grootens

Biography

Faizah Grootens, born and raised in Curaçao, graduated from the Amsterdam School of the Arts (AHK) and the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba.

In 2022, she was invited by Korzo and the Nederlands Dans Theater to create a choreography for the Here We Live and Now program, within which already many great choreographers of the future were given their first opportunities to create new work in The Hague.

Her work is characterized by the tenderness, accessibility and sensitivity, vulnerability, temperament, infinity, fluid circular movements and polyrhythms of the creolized dance forms that emerge through her Creole body language in a contemporary form. Faizah’s signature is characterized by being a process and inner experience that has no one ready-made form. The somatic approach to aesthetics ensures that the focus is on the inner experience rather than the form.

She is active as a dancer, teacher and choreographer. She has already created several contemporary choreographies for Compañía Taller Coreográfico de la UNAM, Laleget Danza, Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten and Het Zuidelijk Toneel, among others.

In Mexico, in addition to her career as a dancer, Grootens presented several programs in collaboration with Diego Vázquez, including one with Compañía Nacional de Danza.

In recent years, her own choreographies have been performed at Holland Dance Festival, Kalamata Dance Festival and at Skånes Dansteater’s Dansfunk Festival, among others.
